A Concrete Example of RAG's Failures

Picture a spreadsheet tracking sales leads with a column for lead status. You ask: "What's the most common lead status right now?"

A basic RAG system might find a chunk containing just 10 rows and confidently tell you the average of those 10 rows—as if it were the entire spreadsheet. That's not just unhelpful; it's dangerously misleading.

The Solution: Agentic RAG and Multi-Modal Data Access

The solution is multi-layered and requires thinking beyond simple document retrieval.

SQL-Powered Analytics

For structured data questions, we need SQL (Structured Query Language)—the standard database querying language. But implementing this through a chat interface is tricky. The system needs to:

  1. Recognize that the question requires structured data analysis (not simple document retrieval)
  2. Understand the question in natural language
  3. Construct the appropriate SQL query
  4. Execute it against the correct database
  5. Format the results back into conversational language

Agentic Reasoning

This is where agentic RAG comes in. Instead of giving your AI a single tool (document retrieval), you give it multiple tools and the ability to reason about which one to use:

  • Traditional RAG lookup for document-specific questions
  • SQL queries for tabular data analysis
  • Full document retrieval when context is needed
  • Metadata browsing to identify relevant sources

The agent decides which approach fits the question, and can even try multiple strategies if the first one doesn't yield good results.

Why RAG Agents Fail (And How to Fix Them)

Customers consistently report that RAG agents fail to deliver consistent answers. There are two fundamental reasons:

Insufficient Pipeline Robustness

The system isn't equipped to handle multiple methods of data extraction. It needs to:
